A second powerful earthquake has struck Turkey just hours after the worst quake in 80 years wrought destruction across the region, killing more than 1,000 people and wounding many more.

The second quake, which hit south-east Turkey on Monday afternoon local time, registered 7.5 on the Richter Scale, according to the US Geological Service. It followed a 7.8 magnitude quake just after 4am that caused huge destruction, levelling thousands of buildings and sending people fleeing into the streets.
